My work for level 3
Term 1

This is my first panel 1 in term 1. I'm dealing with words, contrast and colourful objects.
my second panel on the right. Both panels don't fit with each other. So I changed my theme and board.
Term 2
Again I changed my panel. I started with candles and I might use it again in my second board. Sunlight is used for lighting.

I still worked with sunlight, shadows and reflection.
The panels are very repetitive and I couldn't think of things to expand it.

These are my plans for my board. Shadows, tone, texture, elegance and sunlight is my main ideas for my panels. I would like to mirror the technique on my boards. Like a puddle of water is mirroring sunlight or the sun. I'm wanting to use black and white filters and negative and positive filters as well. Because I like using the monochrome filter, I am using it in my whole filo board. So I'm going to work with contrast, tone and try to use the black and white filter and making it look amazing. In panel 1, I'm using shadows of hands, black and white, sunlight and being inspired by Man Ray's photograms. I want the objects that I want to show to stand out and the background black or shaded. I want my main focus on lighting and how it helps with the mood, tone and texture of the image. I want to work with reflection and/or mirrors but also want to show elegance in my work. Silhouettes and shadows are shown in my ideas and how you can manipulate them and turn them into something different or indifferent depends on how I perceive them to the views. Panel 1 is my experiment with using black and white and negative and positive filters. Panel 2, I'm planning to use the same black, white, negative and positive filter but I'm wanting a Garden-like theme, flowers, trees and sky. Also still using sunlight and elegance however wanting grunge. Nirvana is a good definition of grunge. That sloppy look and dark mood but on my board, having an elegance to lighten the image. In my ideas for panel 2, old chairs, plants or something old looking is what I'm moving towards. Most old antiques have a story behind it and its fascinating to me. I'll probably not use old antiques on my board but my plan might change. Panel 3 ideas are mostly the same, Garden-like theme, shadow, texture, tone, etc. Grunge, lighting, the reflection of the water making a mirror-like image. Still using a monochrome filter. I would like to have images of the sun popping through the trees to connect with the sun in panel 1 and 2. Also pronouncing the image that I want to show in the photo. Buildings will probably be on my boards too because old buildings have amazing textures like paint falling off the walls or oxidizing of the stone walls making the green grassy feel and look, mould. But in front of the mouldy build will be red roses, white daisies and yellow daffodils. Elegance.
I love the way the candle is reflecting like a mirror. It's simple; darkness, ignited candle and it has the 3 point view meaning there are 3 objects - 3 flames - and it's in the centre so it's eye-catching.
I like the idea of using light texture for my board and elegance - Jewellery - So the first thing I thought of is sunlight candle, a light bulb. sunlight bring elegance so when you put glittery jewellery, it brings out this beautiful picture. I like the way the med photo has a texture of the sunlight shining through and the dirty window and shaded object in the middle of the photo.
The sunlight is popping through the jewellery making the object shaded

I want to work with putting words into my photos and board. I photoshopped this picture. I like the way it looks. Repetitive. It fits in with my other photos on my board.

The picture with the 3 hands with help with a mirror and sunlight and a hand. Makes me feel there are different ways to handle and need help. To me, reminds me of the human in us needing and wanting help every day without knowing that you do. If help disappears I feel like society will be abandon. But we do have help in different ways to handle situations.
Term 3

leading lines can be used to create a powerful photo that has a strong visual impact. The lines help draw the eye into the photo and focus the attention on the main object. It also creates depth and symmetry. I haven't used it in my artboard but I do like the idea of it.

Soo, why I used sunlight in my photography because the light gives the image texture, luminosity in my image. It also brings mood and tone in the photo. So it's important to use light correctly to get the best texture. Using monochrome in my board produces depth and shapes, shadows, because of the sunlight. Black and white give the image a timeless perspective. Using black and white creates great depths that you can explore in different ways. For example, the hands have a monochrome filter in the first panel. It brings out a short of attitude and character into the image by itself. If it was in colour you would see the image differently. Maybe more happy or even sad, people see images individually. Us Haman has different feelings toward a particular image or object in the image. As while using black and white, it helps focuses on a particular object. It brings out the purest thought in everyone minds. I think using colour images makes up a story. How? By using light, contrast, texture, shape and form. So when black and white is applied it eliminates distraction, so the person viewing the images can create a story for themselves.
1922 Man Rayy photograms are seen in my panel 1 board -- the black and white hands--. In the photogram, you can see hands and people kissing. The left hand is very pronounced than the right. It looks like there are two parts to this photograms.
Another photogram with hands and texture of smoke. You can tell the hands are close to the camera to make them very bright. Far away from the camera, less noticeable the object is. The picture on the left is by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. There is a shadow on the hand with a couple of wires or small metal rods. It looks like the hand hard against the glass to make the effect. Compare to my panel, These pictures influence my panel 1 hand pictures.
I didn't like the photos I took for my second board or they didn't fit so I planned out some ideas that I could use. I wanted more shadows and/or silhouettes of hands or feet or a person, showing the connection from panel 1. So in my thumbnails, I'm wanting more water-related things so I tie it into panel 3 and hands to tie it into panel 1. I want to do more reflection images on water and sunlight going through trees to tie it into both panels. I planned for flowers. A person holding flowers etc. I want to use the blurring filter, like blurring the background or the object. Still wanting Monochrome throughout my boards and grunge. As I was looking through my boards it looks like an old fairy tale, expressly shown in panel 3. I like how story-book it looks, but it turned into real life. Then, of course, it has a grungy appearance.

I have changed my second board to fit and connect with my ideas. Reflections, mirroring Shadows, black and white, negative and positive filters, sunlight and silhouettes. The first board are med-close up shots of hands, legs, silhouettes. The second board is more open space, more nature is involved. Showing that I want to do something with plants and flowers. The third board is nature partnered up with sunlight, shadows etc. I worked with natural sunlight to give the images a more realistic approach. In every board, I start with the sun showing the viewer that the light is coming from the sky and I like how the sunlight is coming through the trees and window. I used the mirror-like object to help move on to the nature part of my theme. I did this because us, humans, are part of nature and show beautiful nature is but still using my theme, grunge with elegance.

My contact sheets

I talked to my teacher about my board and she said to cut some photos out because it's too busy. Then I took her advice and try to save some photos from my 2nd board and planned more fitted photos for my 2nd or maybe 3rd board. I want to bring flowers into my board still because I like the way flowers give the photo life and give a sense of meaning. For instance, a healthy-looking flower gives the photo life and happiness or if the flower is dead-looking it gives the photo a sad demeanour. To me, the colours of the flower can have meaning. Blue flowers make me think of paintings and old people having them in pots. white flowers make me think of weddings and formals. Yellow flowers; summer, blue skies, burnt glass. purple flower; bees, red/orange skies. Red roses; love, grunge, romance. Colours set a mood for everyone's opinion and emotion.

This is a good example of what I want to do in my 3rd board. Shadows with real-life emotions or objects. I got this image from Pinterest by Benethis. By using the shadows and putting faces on them, makes the viewer sense and feel of emotion because each shadow has different emotions. The audience is most likely to pick out the emotion that they are feeling.
I showed my panels to a photographer from the Netherlands. She liked my panel and explained why and how she liked my photos. Also, she helped me expand my theme and ideas to get a better grade and make my panel connect better. So she said it looks like I'm taking fashion-forward style photography and do more reflection to add on to the reflection series. Therefore, I made more thumbnails for my panels. In my thumbnails, there are more shadows and reflection. My props are possibly going to be a mirror, water -- lacks, rivers puddles etc-- because they reflect objects, mirror objects...duh :). I want my model to hold a mirror to show what's in front of her. I also want lots of flowers in these photos. I want to take peoples shadows while they walk to have the silhouettes connection throughout my board. I was thinking about why I want to use shadows for my board this year. Manipulating of the lighting and exposure of shadows within the image can be added or removed darkness, it dramatically alters the overall feel and depth of the photo. And having the image black and white makes it timeless and adds dramatic meaning for the viewers. Silhouettes photography is an amazing way to add drama, mystery, emotion and mood outlined with a featureless object or person(s). By using mirrors and/or water as reflection photography creates an echo of the image. I use the mirroring technique correctly, it can tell a story.
I used the mirror to show that I'm using reflection/mirroring images in this panel and most-likely in other panels. I wanted it to connect to the hand's images. Indicating that the hands are reflecting and using sunlight to help show dimension layers, tone, and use of Man Ray. And the showing of feet is the Tromp L'oeil technique. I feel like it makes more sense in "connection" wise. There are two images of silhouettes symbolising I'm going to work with silhouettes. The silhouettes images have a black background and light foreground. Another Man Ray uses. Man Ray is the main Artist model that I'm applying. Man Ray is mimicking shadows because of his Photograms. By using black-and-white and negative-and-positive filters help me show that I'm using Man Ray technique.
Compare to term 1, 2,3 it changed a lot. I start with a colourful filter and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in understanding. I start with objects that don't mean anything too personally, more trying to find an object to photograph with. Then pop in shadows and people out of nowhere. So I changed my theme. I was and still, working with sunlight and shadows. But I moved on using hands and jewellery. Then tried to expand that theme. But I didn't like it. So I changed it again. Now I'm working with black and white contrast, sunlight and tone. Still using shadows and reflections from H2O or mirror. Also reflecting on Man Rays' photograms. The photograms are the shadow hands. I like how my board is flowing. I changed my bottom right picture to match the images above. Because it seems to fit more clearly on the panel. Therefore, from term 1 - now I have been working with shadow, sunlight and contrast.

This is my 2nd panel. The picture above is what I want to do to fill in the gap in panel 2. I feel that it would be cool and it fits in. It connects with panel1. I also want to do more Trompe L'oeil.
My teacher and I had a conversation about the placement of panel 1. Marionette puppets came to her mind, so I want to expand that theme. She also said; it's like someone controlling a person with strings. That where marionette puppets come in. And the person is going on a journey.

In my photoshoot that I did last week on Tuesday, I tried to do the black and white photo above. The light shining through the figures. My prop was the mirror and light. My mistake was the light was too close to the hand. In the black and white photo, it's further away from the hand. Showing more of the light source and the hands. But I still think it works.
This is what I got.
I would like to do another photoshop with full-body shadow, hands and feet. Multiple Exposure is shown in these photos above. Last year I photoshopped similar results.
Finished my board on 6/11/2019 at 4:04 pm.
I reprinted many copies because some didn't print well or I printed on the wrong material. But I got there and finished.
this works great for task one. Do you have your brainstorm and ideas for your why on hand? it would be good to see them posted up along with a discussion relevant to this. I am going to share your blog post onto the google+community, and would like you to join this community too as your name is not appearing there. Good start for the year.
ReplyDeleteThis looks nice and complete. now you should be using these constructs to create series of works based on these techniques, but your 'why'.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Emma - i think ynou need to examine how to shoot in m ore of a studio set up. use the auditorium, and some spot lighting and show the behind the scenes kind of stuff that would have went into creating a movie poster?
ReplyDeleteyou seem to have deleted all your stuff for term one (i know you started again a number of times...) it is still relevant and interesting evidence for your internals as well as demonstrating how darned hard you have worked this year. Can you please reinstate this? there is a particularly cool idea in here that you have not used with the smiley faces and the shadows... missed opportunity?
